The Marilyn Manson effect

A PR for Sonia Rykiel has just emailed me a picture of the actress Evan Rachel Wood. The accompanying text reads, “Actress Evan Rachel Wood wore a black silk and mohair dress from the Sonia by Sonia Rykiel A/W collection to a screening of ‘Across The Universe’ in Los Angeles, CA.Â
( in July 07 ). SONIA by SONIA RYKIEL DRESS - £348.â€
Yes, the dress, and the wearer, are very pretty (that’s her, on the right). But that’s not what one notices about the picture, is it?
No, what any observer with more than a passing interest (and, granted, it does have to be more than passing – but I know you’re out there) will see, is how the lovely Ms Wood, who last year got together with Marilyn Manson (after being cast as the lead in the musician’s yet-to-be-released film about Alice in Wonderland), is strangely morphing into her boyfriend’s ex, the equally delectable Dita Von Teese. But while Teese, here in a black Roland Mouret Galaxy dress, has made a name for herself (and, one imagines, a ton of money) as the world’s most famous burlesque performer and pin-up, Wood, only 20 years old, has yet to score a commercial hit (although she made a strong impression in the 2003 film Thirteen, in which she played a wild teenager given to bouts of sex, drugs, and body-piercing).
Manson is like the goth Hugh Hefner: being his girlfriend involves adhering to a strict aesthetic. Does Wood feel the pressure of the ex? Does Manson encourage all of his girlfriends to dress like this (remember Rose McGowan?)? Don’t bow to the pressure, Evan. (Or is that ‘Evan Rachel’?) You need to find your own sartorial identity. Or lose the boyfriend.
